Assistance to families raising children with developmental disabilities: a new UNICEF project is operating in Lviv Oblast
In Lviv, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Lviv Rehabilitation Center “Zherelo” are implementing a project of emergency response to the needs of children with developmental difficulties or disabilities. These are internally displaced children and children whose condition has worsened as a result of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine, the press service of the Lviv City Council reports.
In just one month of project implementation, “Jerel” consulted more than 220 children with developmental disabilities and their families, and took care of 74 children who need more help or special services.
It is noted that this project operates in 7 regions of Ukraine. In each oblast, teams of specialists meet daily with parents of children with disabilities, including internally displaced children, and also visit residential institutions, especially those where children with disabilities or developmental difficulties were evacuated.
“During the last week in Lviv, a team of specialists with correctional classes visited the modular town in Sikhiv, where forced migrants temporarily live, special boarding school No. 100. We also visited the Church of Christ the Savior on St. Warsaw. We have under our care a family from Kramatorsk that lives there. These are two minor girls – Yulia and Katrusya with their aunt, who became their guardian. Their family came under fire at the train station, unfortunately, the mother died, the girls received shrapnel wounds. We advise them on registered disabilities, have drawn a road map for the registration of social assistance. A specialist in physical rehabilitation advises on reducing back pain, the family also needs humanitarian assistance, we are looking for various opportunities to support and help them,” the institution said.
In addition, the project combines the efforts of various specialists so that the child receives the comprehensive help he needs.
Project specialists will also develop and distribute important materials on the development of accessibility and support for children with disabilities in the communities that will receive them, train social workers and other community professionals on the practical aspects of helping children with developmental disabilities. Parents and guardians will receive expert advice and psychological support during difficult times.
